Student Loan Support
Extra support
There may be additional help available to pay for items such as books and equipment in the form of a new special support grant. You may be eligible for this is you are entitled to income support or housing benefit but are not if you are getting a maintenance grant.
Non-repayable bursaries must also be provided by universities and colleges charging more than £2,700 a year in course fees to students receiving the full maintenance grant of £2,700. This means you could receive an extra £300 if your university or college charges the full £3,000.
However, whatever grant and non-repayable funds you receive, it’s likely you will need to work and take out student loans to cover the rest of your living costs. Parents are expected to go some way towards filling the gap but there is a limit to what they will be willing or able to provide.
