The Student Loan application process

You can apply for a student loan if you are on a full-time or sandwich course or if you are doing part-time initial teacher training, although you may not qualify if you have already been in higher education so check with your Local Authority.



The amount you can borrow depends on your household income, with 25% of it being income assessed, and where you are living while studying. The maximum amounts available for the 2006/2007 academic year are £6,170 for students living in London away from their parents’ home and £4,405 elsewhere, and £3,415 for those living in their parents’ home.

The loan is paid to you in three installments at the beginning of each term and you will be provided with a schedule of payments telling you exactly how much will be paid to you and when.
